I see them all as integrally related. It’s difficult for me to determine what the ‘wider context is’, whether it is sustainability, social responsibility or global citizenship. A focus on social responsibility and global citizenship needs absolutely to take account of sustainability (encompassing the environmental, the social and the intergenerational). Sustainability education, even where its focus is on a particular locale, does need to consider the links between the local and global.
Perhaps the response to the question is implicit in the presentation focus on wicked problems. Wicked problems, as Helen and Anna discuss them, are ‘open ended’ (and therefore link to the social and global). To respond to them students need to define the nature and scope of the problem, in order to come up with potential solutions. The exploration of what the problem is necessarily involves understanding of global interconnections. Students might move to that understanding themselves or be nudged towards it.
